Errol R. Alden, MD, FAAP, is executive director/CEO of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), an organization of 60,000 primary care pediatricians, pediatric medical subspecialists and pediatric surgical specialists, based in Elk Grove Village, Ill. 

Alden was the chief investigator for the Future of Pediatric Education II Project and served on the International Pediatric Association's (IPA) Standing and Executive committees. Alden has authored or co-authored more than 45 published articles along with numerous abstracts, commentaries and chapters.   

In addition to his work with the AAP, Alden served as vice chair/chair of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) from 2003-2005.  He also serves on the Council of Medical Specialty Societies (CMSS), and as an alternate delegate to the American Medical Association.

Alden was awarded the Joseph St. Geme, Jr., Leadership Award in May 1997, the only award for leadership in medical education given by the entire pediatric community.  In addition, he and colleagues won the Gold Medal Award from the AAP in 1977 for their work in teaching neonatal resuscitation.

A 1966 graduate of Ohio State University, Alden completed his internship and residency at Madigan Army Medical Center and a fellowship in neonatology at the University of Washington, Seattle. Alden is currently clinical professor at the Department of Pediatrics of the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland.
