John Swanson serves on the staff of the American Academy of Family Physicians, a Leawood, Kansas-based organization representing more than 93,300 family physicians, family practice residents and medical students nationwide.

Swanson is the director of the Academy’s Practice Support division, responsible for policy analysis and programming in the areas of health care financing and delivery systems, physician payment, quality measurement and improvement, privileging, practice redesign and private sector advocacy. He also provides staff leadership for the AAFP in advancing the patient centered medical home by working collaboratively with multiple stake holders.

Other professional responsibilities have included rural primary care resources development, work force planning and health plan development/regulation while working with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. He has also worked internationally in rural health planning and resources development. He received his pharmacy degree from the University of Nebraska and a master’s degree in public health from the University of California at Berkeley.
