Vera (Fan) Tait

Dr. Fan Tait is an Associate Executive Director of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and Director of the Department of Community and Specialty Pediatrics at the AAP. From 1998 to 2005, Dr. Tait served as Bureau Director of Children with Special Health Care Needs within the Utah Department of Health. During that time, she also served as Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Utah School of Medicine Department of Pediatrics.



A native of Alabama, Dr. Tait attained a bachelor of science degree in chemistry from the University of Alabama and her medical degree from the University of Kentucky Medical Center, after which she completed her pediatric residency and a pediatric neurology fellowship at the University of Utah Medical Center.



At the AAP, Dr. Tait oversees five divisions within the Department of Community and Specialty Pediatrics that administer activities and provide support and technical assistance to national committees, sections, councils, task forces, and work groups that develop policy statements, clinical/technical reports, manuals, and other resource materials on child health for medical professionals. One recent notable addition to the Department’s area of responsibility under Dr. Tait’s direction was the AAP’s expansion of staff to provide assistance to pediatricians to support children in times of disaster. Six of the AAP strategic priorities fall within her department, including Special Health Care Needs, Foster Care, Disaster Preparedness, Mental Health, Obesity, and Medical Home.
