Director of Communications
Patient Centered Primary Care Collaborative
Created in 2006, the Patient-Centered Primary Care Collaborative (PCPCC or Collaborative) is a large coalition of more than 1,000 organizations and individuals—comprised of employers, consumer and patient/family advocacy groups, patient quality organizations, health plans, labor unions, hospitals, physicians and other health professionals—who have joined together to advance an effective and efficient health system built on a strong foundation of primary care and the patient-centered medical home (PCMH). The Collaborative serves as a broad-based national advocacy organization for the primary care patient centered medical home, providing information and networking opportunities to facilitate support for the PCMH.
The Collaborative is seeking a Director of Communications to oversee communications efforts to effectively market and promote the Collaborative and advance the primary care patient-centered medical home, reporting directly to the Executive Director, in close collaboration with the Chief of Operations and with the dynamic staff team.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Strategy and Planning
- Defines the overall marketing and communications strategy, including the Collaborative’s internal and external messages.
- Establishes strategic marketing communications external partnerships to leverage communications reach and maximize opportunities to promote the PCPCC brand and mission objectives.
- Guides the organization in building a strong online presence and social media strategy, helping the organization adapt to a changing media landscape.
- Sets and drives the strategic direction for media relations, ensuring relationships with key health care reporters in the major media and other reporters.
- Sets and drives the strategic direction regarding the mix of internal and external resources necessary for the effective execution of the Collaborative’s communications and marketing.
- Counsels members of the staff team on effective communications strategies, collaborating with them on yearly work plans for communications outreach, to help reach policy goals and increase the organization's visibility.
- Establishes, manages, and evaluates the Collaborative’s communications' annual goals, priorities and budget, collaborating with the Executive Director, the Chief of Operations, and the staff team to ensure their respective marketing and communications efforts are properly budgeted and monitored.
- Maintain a flexible events calendar (including webinars and conference calls) based on overall organization and communications strategy.
- Develop and implement specific, relevant product launch campaigns for key PCPCC original content including technical research reports, op-ed columns, blog posts, policy toolkits, and white papers. Conduct full campaign analysis and review of results.
Production and Oversight of Content
- Introduces new and creative approaches to marketing and communications content designed to expand the Collaborative’s name recognition and to reach to key audiences (Executive Committee members, policymakers, government officials, advocates) and reaches out to new audiences not currently part of the Collaborative’s core network.
- Oversees the development, design, production, and editorial direction of high-quality and effective print, electronic, web and video communications.
- Directs other staff team and personally participates in writing, editing, proofreading, design, photography and video creation.
- Produces e-communications, op-eds, news releases, press materials, and news events/conferences, as well as participates in the production of reports, issue briefs, funding proposals.
- Creates and deploys strategic marketing communications programs targeting key industry and market sector influencers, such as media, industry analysts, and select partners to fuel PCPCC's brand presence and reputation as a leading nonprofit advocacy organization.
- Develops strategies to create and maintain relationships with key influencers to engage them in order shape shared messages about the Collaborative.
Dissemination
- Gains news coverage and works with the staff team to conduct outreach through social media for the organization in an effort to carry out the organization's agenda for advancing the primary care patient-centered medical home.
- Strategically combines mass communication, including social media, with advocacy strategies.
- Partners with staff team to use media (television, newspapers, video, social media, websites and more) to advance the Collaborative’s goals and initiatives.
- Ensures creative responses to opportunities to integrate media, technology, and advocacy plans and actions.
- Performs in-depth analysis and reporting of marketing and communications campaign metrics and results such as email open rates, click-thrus, website page views, links, social media followers, and related data.
REQUIREMENTS:
- At least 10 years of experience in the field of communications, to include non-profit advocacy communications, with at least 3 years of management experience.
- Bachelor's degree with a record of continuing education through personal and professional development.
- Professional and effective written and oral communication and management skills.
- Experience in marketing non-profit organizations to industry, advocacy, research and governmental audiences.
- Expertise in media outreach, with the ability to weave various issue areas into a compelling, newsworthy item.
- The ability to frame an issue with a policy solution, painting a clear picture of how the solution will create real change in the lives of Americans.
- Skilled producer of media events, marketing materials, media packaging and related logistics.
- Excellence in originating and preparing written materials, such as issue briefings, press releases, social media, web content and layouts, for use in various communications media.
- Detailed understanding of public relations, persuasion, image, and consistency of message and the ability to work with the unique goals, features and audience of each news output.
- Good team-building relationship skills, time management, and deadline management.
- Experience in, or a strong interest in, the field of health care.
